Be A Smart Shopper!
With today's economy it's in everyone's best interest to learn how to shop the smart way. Ok with gas prices being low at the moment is definitely an added bonus but the low Canadian dollar counter acts that especially when prices at the stores are on the rise especially where produce is concerned. Who really wants to pay as much as $8.00 for cauliflower?! Here are some money saving tips to think about next time you have to run to the store.
There are several applications that you can down load to your smartphone that allow you to price match items. This isn't just for groceries but also you everyday stuff! All the weekly fliers you would receive in your newspaper and then some are available on the app, simply type what item you are looking for and it will show you each store that has it listed at a sale price.
For example purposes take the application called "Flipp". There is a section that has all available fliers for the week, coupons, shopping list and a search field. Type a list of all the items you need to purchase. It automatically finds all the stores that will have those items on sale in their fliers! You just click the arrow and it shows you which store has what item for which price. You simply scroll through the list for the best price and tap the item. The image of the sale price is then saved directly to the "clippings" section of the app. It will also tell you if a coupon is also available for the same item and it automatically clips the coupon and saves it in the "coupon" section!
When you are done shopping simply put all your price match items at the front and tell the cashier you have items to price match and show them your clippings. Pay attention to the size of items that come in packages as the sale is usually for specific sizes and brands.
The negative side to this is that if the sale item is still more expensive than a regular priced item then the regular item will not be in fliers and you can still end up paying more. You will notice this while you shop. Take bananas for example, if store "A" has them on sale in their flier for $0.79 a pound but the store you are shopping at has them regularly for $0.59 so the cheaper price won't be in the flier as this is a regularly priced item for that store.
Get to know which store carries specific items at a low price regularly and pick them up from that store. You can also get that bigger bang for your buck! Why would you pay $12 for almond butter at store "A" when store "B" sells almond butter for the same price but twice that size? During winter months when things aren't in season why not consider buying frozen fruit and veggies?
Some stores also have loyalty programs. You sign up for free and receive a membership card that you scan with every transaction and build up points. Some come with applications and notify you every week when specific items are worth extra points when they are purchased. These point then accumulate and are transferable to a dollar amount you can redeem on future shopping bills!
Learn to be that smart shopper with all your groceries and house hold items from the things you buy every week to the items you only need every couple of months and keep those extra dollars in your pocket.
