Post Competition Interview: Stella

Image
Name : STELLA URSINO  Age : 46 Competition: BIKINI (Grand Masters) Placing : 1st Place OPA GALA NOVEMBER 2015 What steps did you have to do to your body ready for stage? Lots of time training, and sacrificing my desired meals. I was concerned that desired meals may interfere with lean muscle, so I avoided them altogether. . I also had to train myself to walk in heels! What was your goal for the competition? Just to have the courage to get up on a stage in front of people. I wanted to break out of my comfort zone. I wanted to take a risk, but controlled approach, to challenge myself to do something I normally wouldn't do. I think learning to live outside your comfort zone, doing something forcing you out of it, can prep you for life changes, and give you skills for adapting to sudden and new obstacles. How did you feel during your prep for stage? Great! ENERGIZED!!!! PUMPED!!!! What was your least favorite part of the prep?  The large quantities of water just before ...

My life with an Eating Disorder

Image
My Story: Lauren Brazier  I was eight years old the first time I had sex. Eight. Years. Old. Unwilling, terrifying, gut wrenching sex. And at that very moment I lost that little girl inside me... I was sexually molested from the age of eight to eleven by the same man, over and over and over again. “Be a good little girl, don’t tell” are the seven words that haunted me for years, acting as a silent devil sitting by my wayside just waiting to appear and burn what was left of my soul. At such a young age I didn’t understand why this man was doing this to me, it didn’t feel good, I cried every time as he held me down and threatened to go after my sisters if I ever opened my mouth. I was the youngest child, the little sister who truly believed she had to protect them, I couldn’t let him do this to them; it would have been my fault. So I took it, I held my breath and wished for it to be over, inside my eight year old self just wanted a way out, to run away, to hide, to just die. I felt trapp...

Time Management & Motivation

Contributing Writer: Evelina Osiadacz Let’s face it, one of the biggest struggles of fitness is securing enough time and motivation each day towards our goals. Between being a top-notch student, excelling worker, devoted parent, or a committed lover, we find ourselves buried in tasks which cloud our personal ambitions. On top of that, we feed ourselves empty promises such as “I’ll do it tomorrow,” or “next time,” all to not follow through in the end. We are constantly racing against the clock, but what if I told you that time is on our side and you can be the superhero you are without compromising your fitness goals? We need to start with reframing our conception of time. Remember when I said that time was on our side? That’s only as true as you make it. Dedicating a few minutes in the day to stay active and take care of yourself should not be a task you do to fill up moments of inactivity, but a regular part of your routine. If you are able to take on more projects you can count, why ...

Overcoming Demons: My Experience Eating Out at The Keg

Was eating out for one of the first times recovering from an eating disorder perfect? No, it wasn’t, but isn’t that to be somewhat expected? That doesn’t mean however, that I shouldn’t be proud of myself or give up on my journey to health and recovery. So what, I didn't manage to eat or order a baked potato like my coach requested? So what that I questioned whether any oil or butter was added to my steamed asparagus and made my mother and brother try the asparagus to reassure me of it? What I did manage was to join my family for my mother’s birthday dinner, something I haven’t done in as many years as I can remember. I managed to eat an entire (and completely delicious) 6oz steak despite the fact that my mind was racing with negativity and self-doubt. This experience and account wasn’t one of a failure, quite the opposite, an account of a successful small step in the right direction towards a strong and healthy mind and body. If I could give a few suggestion to anyone experiencing ...

Dining Out Tips

Eating out can be quite challenging when you are on a balanced meal plan, have dietary restrictions or allergies.  Here are some helpful tips for when those special occasions arise and you are faced with restaurant celebration situations. Scope out some restaurant menus online in advance. Take a look at what types of healthy options are available.  There are a lot of menus out there that have a healthy eating section, gluten free or allergy guides.  This way you can choose the best location to dine at that will suit your tastes and meal plan. When the meal has a choice of side dishes go for the salad or fruit instead of French fries, rice or mashed potatoes as these tend to be a large serving and contain high amounts of additives.   Where beverages are concerned water is your best bet! Add some lemon or lime for added flavouring and a refreshing taste. When ordering salads ask for the dressing on the side, this way you can add as much or as little as you want without all the excess.  A...
